If you’ve attending the Los Angeles IPA Festival before chances are you recognize the name Evan Price. Heck, if you drink beer and haven’t been under a rock for the last five years you more than likely know his name. Evan is the Head Brewer for Noble Ale Works and the two-time winner of the IPA Fest. We caught up with him just days before the big event.
What will you look for when judging the IPA Fest?
As a brewer I make the beer that I like to drink so I am looking for someone to make what I want even better. I’ll be looking for the whole package — A mostly clear IPA, little to no yeast and suspension, deep gold color and lots of pleasant hop aromatics. Read more
The Big Reveal
“Around here, people love hoppy beers. Take one look at the beer menu at Tony’s Darts Away or Mohawk Bend and you’ll see that we are hop crazed too. The LA IPA Festival is a fun and competitive event which brings many of California’s best IPA brewers together as judges and contestants,” said Tony Yanow, festival organizer and owner of beer destinations Tony’s Darts Away and Mohawk Bend. “While there is a healthy representation of LA-area breweries including two-time IPA Fest winner Evan Price of Noble Ale Works, local favorite Bob Kunz of Highland Park Brewery and beer pioneers Jeremy Raub and Ting Su of Eagle Rock Brewing, we also have judges and beers from San Diego, Sonoma County and beyond. This year we are excited to welcome John Verive, Sarah Bennett and Tomm Carroll to the judging panel, a group of acclaimed writers and beer critics who have helped put Los Angeles on the brewing map.”

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Julian Shrago has transformed the California craft beer scene. He runs a little place you may have heard of, Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, and his brews represent the unique diversity found in C.A.’s beach playgrounds. With two locations, one in Long Beach and the other in Seal Beach, Shrago has made his mark on the beer world in a big way. Since 2010 Beachwood has won 10 medals in the Great American Beer Festival, most recently taking home a silver metal for Mocha Machine, a 9.2 percent ABV Porter. (We are drooling!) Read more
When Eagle Rock Brewery opened its doors in 2009, it was the first microbrewery to open in Los Angeles in more than 60 years. Hard to believe today when it seems like a new brewery opens every week but back then owners Jeremy Raub, his wife Ting Su and his father Steve Raub were true trend-setters. Given his unique perspective on the LA beer world and his killer brewing skills, we are thrilled to welcome Jeremy back to both the competition and the judges table for the Los Angeles IPA Festival on March 12th at Mohawk Bend.
Jeremy sat down with our team and talked shop aka all things beer. Read more
